Why is it that we become overwhelmed so easily? When you really stop to consider the source of the panicky feeling, the distinct changes in breathing, the stomach clenching, the increased perspiration–what actually causes each of these ’symptoms’ is that which we are thinking. And it is quite easy to start thinking in a manner which only raises our anxiety, such as “What am I going to do?”And,” What if this happens?” Or, “What if that happens?” Or, perhaps, “I can’t do this!” Or,” Oh, I forgot to do that.” So, it just escalates from there, and we take the sympathetic nervous system of our body along on the journey with us!
What can you do when you find yourself in the State of Overwhelm? Well, first things first. The most important thing to do when you one find yourself in the State of Overwhelm? Take a deep, cleansing breath, begin controlling your breathing, think positively, and use positive self-talk. A few of good examples are as follows: ‘I can do this.’ ‘I am okay.’ ‘I am fine!’ (…add a little bit of attitude!) ‘I can handle this.’ Then, make a written list all the thoughts and feelings you are experiencing, and start with one thing at a time.
To get a little fancy, you can separate the items for which you know you have a solution from the items which require more problem solving by dividing the paper and writing “I Have Control Over” as a title on one side, and “Needs More Thought” as a title on the other side. This automatically reduces some of the overwhelming anxiety - because several of the items will have immediate solutions, and when you take it one at a time - you accomplish the task, and Tada! You feel better and are moving out of the State of Overwhelm! You are preparing to set up ‘house-keeping’ in a much more pleasant place.
