The Connection Between Nutrition and Panic Attacks
Posted by anxiouswill in Anxiety Depression, Prescription Anxiety Drugs on May 04th, 2009
Panic attacks are pretty common, and they can be triggered by different causes. Each person suffering from such an attack may have a different “source” responsible for the situation. One cause has to do with your everyday health - your diet and general nutrition. Sounds a little strange, right? But it has been found that certain foods may cause anxiety and panic attacks for some people. We all know that a healthy diet is an important key to feeling good, and awareness of healthy nutrition is growing.
Apparently, this is also true when it comes to mental and psychological issues such as panic attacks. For some people dealing with such attacks, the cause is lack of certain vitamins and minerals which the body requires for balance. Examples of such vitamins are B12 and niacin, and a shortage of them may result in a higher tendency of having attacks. Taking these vitamins in the proper amount - artificially or in different foods - can reduce such attacks. Another diet-related cause can be too much sugary foods. Yup, all the chocolates and candy can pretty much bring on the next anxiety attack. Therefore, reducing sugars in your daily diet can reduce attacks, and help you feel better. Of course, the above said isn’t true for each and everyone, and it has a lot to do with genetics.
If there is a tendency in your family to suffer from panic attacks, you should definitely watch what you are eating. You can consult your doctor or a naturopath, for guidance in what foods or supplements to take. (Naturally, it is best to get all your body requires from food, by combining the different food groups, and plenty of colorful fruit and vegetables…). The important thing is to do whatever in your power to maintain a healthy diet, not only for eliminating anxiety attacks, but for better general health.
