Breathing Exercises For Overcoming Panic Attacks - What If They Aren't Working For You
Posted by anxiouswill in Prescription Anxiety Drugs on August 27th, 2009
For many panic attack and general anxiety sufferers a key part of their strategy for overcoming panic attacks is the use of breathing exercises. These exercises are usually used to calm sufferers down either before or during an attack. If you’re a suffer who is starting to find that they’re not working as well as they once did, recent scientific findings might have the answer. If this describes you, there is a new technique available to all.
Using breathing to relax is often a core technique as they work to manage attacks and their anxiety in everyday situations. Although it is useful, many are finding that it doesn’t always seem to have the desired effect. If not that they may begin to find that the relief is decreasing. Although they are useful techniques, recent science is now pointing to why this might be the case.
The Research, from 2007, shows that during a panic attack, the part of the brain that takes over the dominant role is the area in control of what is known as your fight or flight response. In short your brain and your body have moved to survival mode, in which you are ready to run or to stand and fight. There is a problem with this for people looking to use breathing exercises. Because of where the control has shifted to, it becomes very difficult for your breathing exercises to break the cycle by the time the attack reaches this point.
What is now being learned about panic attacks and more importantly methods in overcoming panic attacks is that by the time you’re in a full blown attack breathing exercises can be limited in the impact they have. It’s a little like closing the stable after the horse has bolted. As a result the effect they have can be inconsistent. Unfortunately most sufferers need a consistent method for managing their anxiety.
If your true goal is overcoming panic attacks as opposed to managing them you need to move to something more fundamental. Something that will give consistent relief. By moving to something more effective you will feel the benefit because you become in control from the outset leading to long term relief. That technique exists and it can be learned by anyone in a matter of hours and can be found on the internet.
