Overcoming panic disorder is a long process, and can feel like a losing battle at times. I struggled for a little over a year with regular panic attacks and several different medications before I finally felt some semblance of control in my life again. Here’s what I did to begin again a productive, healthy lifestyle despite being diagnosed with panic disorder.

  1. Don’t fall into the trap of assigning “safe places”. Since most of us who have panic attacks dread losing control in public especially, we often long for the safety of our own bedroom when we feel one coming on. Don’t let yourself cling to certain places as being safe havens, because you will start to restrict your travel more and more, and fixate on returning to your “safe” house. Force yourself to go out to new places and meet new people.
  2. Don’t change your routines, and do not shape your life around your disorder. Go about all the same errands and activities you’ve always done, mundane and for entertainment. Your mind responds to your body (that’s why panic attacks are so scary), but your body also responds to your mind. If you keep shopping at the grocery store even though your heart is pounding and you are breathing shallowly, you force your body to think, “Hmm…maybe they’re not going to react to my fight-or-flight response…why bother, then?” That’s what you want. Slowly, you can start being in control of your body again, not the other way around.
  3. Tell people you trust what you’re going through. I went two months before I even told my boyfriend what was happening to me, and that was just because I didn’t think I could hide it anymore. No one else can really help you get through it, but I was so much more relaxed after I told my boyfriend and my close friends that I might have a panic attack in their presence, but to ignore it and to treat me just the same. After that, I felt comfortable enough to relax around my friends and my boyfriend while I got the issue under control, and I was much happier.
  4. Learn to control your breathing and your tension. I know that’s easier said than done, and the last situation you want to calm down is when you’re freaking out during a panic attack, but it’s really true that you can’t have an accelerating and a decelerating bodily reaction at the same time - you can’t have an upper if you’re forcing a downer - homeostasis always balances out your emotions and your body. If you’re calm, breathing deeply and slowly, and relaxed, it is impossible to have a panic attacks.
