Do I Have an Anxiety Disorder?

Anxiety isn’t always a bad thing. It difficult situations anxiety prepares the body to take action, make tough decisions, and if necessary to react physically to a threatening situation through the fight or flight response. It’s when the gap between a rare situation and daily life merge and the body begins to react with anxiety to situations that are not special, not threatening that we can say that it has become a disorder.
The symptoms of anxiety disorders have a wide range of both physical and emotional symptoms. Also because of the shear amount of different disorders make up anxiety disorders it truly hard to say any particular set of symptoms means you have a disorder. The one symptom that ties all of them together is the constant and or intense feeling of anxiety or panic in everyday situations that wouldn’t effect the average person. Beyond that we can break down some of the possible symptoms into two categories, physical and emotional.
PHYSICAL
- Trembling sensations. Maybe when you’re confronted with something small, like speaking to a small group of people at lunch your hand begins to shake.
- A racing heart. Your heart is beating like you’ve just had hard workout.
- Sweating, just like you’re doing a physically difficult task.
- Headaches that just won’t go away.
- Constant fatigue. You never feel rested.
- Difficulty sleeping.
EMOTIONAL
- Difficulty on focusing on the task at hand.
- A constant feeling that nothing good is going to happen.
- Constantly worrying and always looking for danger.
- Constantly in a bad mood.
- Easily startled, a sense of feeling ‘jumpy’
Now you must also consider what you’re life is like right now. Perhaps you’re under a lot of stress due to work or school. Maybe you’re constantly on the go and never have time to do things for just yourself. Maybe you’re not getting enough time to sleep, exercise, or eat right. If this is the case you might want to consider making little changes so that there’s less of a burden on your shoulders. If this doesn’t help or this isn’t your case then you should seek consultation from a professional.
