Anxiety disorder children seem so happy most of the times that we as adults might mistakenly assume that they have no worries at all. The truth though is the complete opposite. Children, like adults, face the issues of stress and anxiety so much so that children too can suffer from an anxiety related disorder. In fact, the presence of an anxiety disorder in a child can do a lot of harm by negatively affecting his/her thinking, decision making ability, perceptions of the world, as well as his/her learning and concentration capabilities. Therefore to ensure that the child has a bright future it is imperative that the parents know what an anxiety disorder is and what signs need to be looked out for. The worst possible blunder in childcare could be writing off a child’s anxiety condition/disorder as simply a ‘phase the kid is going through’. Since you are reading this article, it’s highly probable that you have a child or know of a child who may be exhibiting some of the common symptoms anxiety disorder children show. Read on then and learn what things you need to know about anxiety conditions or disorders among children.
Before we jump into the symptoms of these disorders, you need to note that there are numerous forms of anxiety disorder children can suffer from. Among the common forms found in children are Generalized Anxiety Disorder (or GAD), Panic Disorder, Separation Anxiety Disorder, Specific Phobias, Social Phobia, and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (or OCD).
Although the symptoms vary from one anxiety condition to another, there are a few similarities found in children suffering from one or the other of the anxiety problems mentioned above. Foremost among these symptoms is excessive worrying and anxiety. To ascertain what kind of an anxiety disorder your child may have, you need to keep a lookout for what triggers his/her panic and anxiety. If for instance the child begins to feel anxious each time he/she is separated from you, for example when you drop them off at school, chances are that your child is suffering from Separation Anxiety Disorder. Similarly, if he/she gets random panic attacks which occur without warning, there is a high probability that his/her condition is a Panic Disorder.
Nonetheless, the final say on what type of anxiety condition/disorder your child has will rest with a medical professional. As a parent your job is to keep a watchful eye on your child’s behavior. If you begin to notice negative changes or find that your child is worrying excessively and taking on too much stress, you need to go meet a doctor who will help you ascertain whether your child has an anxiety condition or disorder, and if so, what type.
When you’re looking for a doctor or psychiatrist, make sure you do extensive research. Ideally speaking you want to find somebody who has a proven track record of working with children who suffer from anxiety disorders. Don’t make the mistake of choosing the first option that comes your way just because you want your child to get immediate treatment. Since an anxiety condition isn’t something which goes away overnight, it is better to be patient and find the best possible solution.
Remember also that if your child is diagnosed with an anxiety disorder you need to remain calm because there are many treatment options today which range from medications to therapy. Therefore, the odds that your child will be able to counter his/her anxiety disorder are very high. Above all though make sure that your child knows that you’re by his/her side throughout the whole process. Your love and your support will be the factor deciding how successful his/her treatment is. Hence, always remain positive and hopeful as your child will feed off of your strength.
