Are You Afraid of Flying? These 10 Tips Can Help Your Flying Anxiety
Posted by anxiouswill in Prescription Anxiety Drugs on October 30th, 2010
I want you to stop being afraid of flying! I know that it’s easier said than done, but with the help of these 10 tips you will hopefully find the relief you seek.
1. Use visualizations to help your overcome the fear
Visualizations are an excellent tool to help you calm down and be more relaxed about your flying fear. Make a mental movie of your upcoming flight as going better than planned. Frequently sit down and spend time imagining yourself as confident and in control.
2. Drink water, and lots of it
When our body is dehydrated we are more susceptible to stress and anxiety. Prevent this by making sure you buy bottles of water after you pass the airport security to bring onto the plane.
3. Rubber band your negative thoughts
Retrain your mind from the negative thoughts you currently experience about flying. Wear a simple rubber band on your wrist and snap it whenever you catch yourself dwelling on a negative thought. Immediately replace it with a positive thought about flying. This will soon become a habit.
4. Herbs that can help
Herbs have a calming effect on the mind and body. Try out Gotu Kola, Kava, Saint John’s Wort, and Valerian just to name a few.
5. Distract yourself from your fear
Use anything you can to take your mind off of your fear. Use the portable DVD players or an MP3 player. Anything that will help you take your mind off of any flying anxiety.
6. Chose your seat wisely
If you fear turbulence, make sure you site closer to the front of the plane. You can also try sitting over the wings for a smoother flight. The back of the plane is generally the worst for turbulence.
7. Progressive Muscle Relaxation can help
It is an exercise which you can do anytime you feel the anxiety and tension begin to attack your body. It involves a sequential tensing and relaxing of your main muscle groups, and it helps release any tension or anxiety from the body.
8. Learn all you can
Learn about aviation, planes, and pilot training. This will help you realize just how well protected you are when you are up in the air. The measures they take to make sure everything goes smoothly are truly incredible.
9. Talk to the flight crew
Meeting and getting to know your pilot can help relax you, and let you know you are in capable hands. Also realizing that the pilot is human and that he probably has a family will help you understand that it is in his best interests to keep the flight safe for all.
10. Chose the proper clothes
If you have tight clothes you might actually start feeling claustrophobic. Wear comfortable and loose clothes so that you don’t get that trapped feeling while flying.
Simple yet very effective. Give these a try and your flight should be much more enjoyable.
