Anxiety and panic attacks can be an experience that is very real, uncomfortable and frightening for people. Some people feel as though their internal world is crashing down on the inside and they almost feel out of control, even though everything is perfectly fine on the outside. These types of feelings are described as having anxiety and panic attacks.

These two experiences are quite similar. Anxiety seems, in some cases, to be present before the panic attack occurs. The anxiety feels like it’s building up for a while and then it eventually builds up to a panic attack.

Many people have linked their anxiety and panic attacks with feelings such as dizziness, tightness in their chest, a heavy feeling in their body, shallow breaths high in their chest and a fast heart beat. Many people also experience themselves being paranoid.

There are many solutions you can implement that can help you eliminate anxiety and panic from your life. These solutions range from changes in your day to day life and some of these solutions involve changes in how you think about the situation that triggers these uncomfortable feelings and sensations within you.

Some people find that actively taking time out of the day to quiet the mind can help greatly. This can involve meditation or simply closing your eyes and being in your body and being aware of the where you are right now, not in the future or the past, but in the present moment.

You do not need to be an expert at meditation to achieve great results. Just take a few minutes to relax and bring yourself into the here and now. To practice this exercise, find quiet place where you can relax completely for a few minutes. All you need to do is pay attention to the good feelings in your body and spread those good feeling around the rest of your body.

Exercise is another great tool for eliminating excess tension and stress in the body and has been said to be one the best ways to renew your emotions. Exercise is great for rejuvenating the mind and body as it releases the happy chemicals in our brain. Regular exercise can greatly help reduce the frequency of anxiety and panic attacks.

Having low energy levels can bring about negative thoughts which can lead to anxiety. Exercise can help keep your daily energy levels up, which can help you think more positive thoughts.

Some people have diets that rob them of energy. Making alterations to your diet can be another good way to increase your overall energy levels and wellbeing. It can be good to avoid eating too much of the foods that spike up your blood sugar levels too fast.

Remember, if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you always got.

Ways to Combat Anxiety

For us humans, anxiety develops from fears and concerns about the future. However, the future is unknown and none of us can accurately predict what will happen. What we do, though, is treat the future as a given, as if we do know what is going to occur and have a belief that we can control or change it. Just a quick scan across all the variables and possibilities of things that can or might happen during a day shows that this is just not true and that we have to deal with what comes our way - in one week in our house a pigeon flew down the chimney and the ceiling fell in! So there is no point in worrying about it, right?

So what does anxiety feel like?

Typically when people get anxious they start to hyperventilate, which is breathing faster and/or deeper than necessary, which brings on feelings of light headedness, dizziness, sweating, chills, nausea and trembling. Someone who is anxious can experience chest pain, feel like they have a constant lump in their throat, become very pale, develop skin rashes, indigestion, heartburn, diarrhoea or constipation.

So how do we go about combating anxiety?

One of the keys to combating anxiety is to relax. As we relax our bodies respond by slowing down the heart rate, slowing down the breathing rate, the muscles of the body become less tense, your blood distributes itself evenly throughout your body, your digestive tract returns to working normally and you find it easier to let go of your fearful thoughts.

So how do we relax?

When you start to feel anxious or frightened, the first thing you need to do is to bring your attention to your breathing.

Start to breathe slowly through your nose using your diaphragm and abdomen. Do not breathe through the mouth, and concentrate on exhaling slowly. Do not take excessively deep breaths, as this may exacerbate the symptoms.

Also, when you start to feel scared and anxious, the way you talk to yourself is very important. To help yourself to relax and become calm, again, it is very helpful to repeat some positive, coping statements to yourself. Some examples are:

‘I will relax and accept what is happening to me’

‘I can be anxious and still deal with the situation’

‘I will let my body relax into whatever is going on. This will pass’

‘This does not feel good, but I can handle it’.

‘I choose to be calm and confident in every situation’

If you feel that you are anxious or stressed a lot of the time, doing visualisations could be very helpful for you. These can be undertaken two or three times a day or, if your situation allows it, when you start to feel scared or anxious. Sit upright on a chair, with your feet on the ground and your hands resting loosely on your knees. Keep all legs, arms, fingers or toes uncrossed! Mentally relax your muscles and take some nice deep breaths before you begin.

Below you will find an example of a visualisation that you can use. You can find many more on pre-recorded CD’s, downloads, in books and on the internet. It is useful to record them somewhere that you play back and follow while you are visualising. You may also want to write your own and record them; using imagery and settings that appeal to you and that you know that you can relax in.

Breathing in Sunshine Guided Visualisation

‘Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Imagine, visualise or sense yourself sitting in a rolling green meadow, dotted with white daisies and golden buttercups.. The sky above is a beautiful blue and the sun is shining. As you are sitting there, sense that a strong ray of golden sunshine is penetrating through the top of your head. See or imagine the warm, golden light of the sun fill your head and then move slowly down your body, filling all of your body cavity with a wonderful, soothing, golden light. As the light of the sun fills your body, dirty black smoke is being gently forced out of the soles of your feet. This is all the anxiety and negativity being pushed out and cleansed away. When your body is totally full of the glorious sunshine, and all of the dirty smoke has been expelled, let the light leave your body knowing that all your anxiety and fears have also gone. Find yourself in a crystal clear waterfall or pool, and bathe in the pure, cleansing water to wash away any lingering remnants of anxiety or fear. Sense yourself sealing up the top of your head and the soles of your feet and surrounding yourself in a protective cocoon of glowing white light. When you are ready, open your eyes and notice how calm, relaxed and wonderful you feel.’

During stressful events our adrenal glands release adrenaline, a hormone which activates our body defense mechanisms causing our hearts to pound, blood pressure to rise, muscles to tense, and the pupils of our eyes to dilate. One out of 75 people world wide experience panic attacks. In America alone, 40 million adults from age 18 and up suffer anxiety disorder. Most people who experience the symptoms are actually not aware that they have it.

Panic attacks are sudden periods of intense anxiety. We experience anxiety due to stress but when it becomes extreme and gives us discomforts such as palpitations, pounding heart and accelerated heart beat, sweating, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, feeling of choking, nausea and dizziness we are sure to have been suffering from this disorder. These symptoms commonly last for as short as 15 seconds to 30 minutes but some may last for extended period and even for hours.

The most common reason for experiencing panic attacks is being in a situation where you think and fear that you wouldn’t be able to escape it. You will then have anxious thoughts that would send shock-waves of different reactions inside the body. You may feel pain, nausea and other types of discomfort leading to dizziness, shortness of breath etc. which results to a nervous breakdown.

Anxious thoughts are doubts that turn into fears. The more doubts you have of not escaping a situation, the more fear it generates. The intensity of the doubt increases the intensity of the fear sending different types of reaction to the body.

To eliminate this, you would have to force these thoughts away because the more fearful reaction you have to the thought, the stronger the thought would remain to your awareness creating more shock-waves of reaction to your body.

Try to change your reaction to the thought or better yet, dismiss the thought that gives you fear. Try moving your attention to other things. Do not allow these thoughts to dominate your mind. That is the only way to be free of them.

Don’t let your mind trick you into believing that anxiety is something that you would always have to struggle with. The cycle of the attacks goes like this: fear intensifies anxiety and anxiety intensifies the attacks. To vanish it, you would have to set your mind to believe that you no longer fear the thought of having panic attacks. Overcoming your fear of it is the only key to eliminate it 100%. You have to break the cycle of anxiety and return to normal everyday living.

You can eliminate panic attacks even without taking medications that have side effects. You can live a normal life just like everyone else. Remember, you don’t have to suffer from it for the rest of your life. There is a solution and it can be done the natural way.
